What Is 13th Month Pay?

13th month pay is additional compensation commonly computed from basic salary earned during the calendar year. In plain terms, it is often about one-twelfth of the basic salary you actually earned from January through December, subject to applicable Philippine rules, company policy, and your employment contract.

Employees who did not work the full year can still receive a prorated amount based on the basic salary they earned during the months they worked. This calculator estimates that amount from the figures you enter.

How Is 13th Month Pay Calculated?

The calculator uses this commonly applied Philippine formula:

13th Month Pay = Total Basic Salary Earned During the Calendar Year ÷ 12

For a constant monthly basic salary, that is the same as:

Estimated 13th Month Pay = Monthly Basic Salary × Months Worked ÷ 12

"Basic salary earned" in this tool means the basic pay amounts you enter for the covered months, minus any optional adjustment you choose to exclude. It does not automatically include overtime, holiday pay, night-shift differential, or allowances.

What Counts as Basic Salary?

This calculator is based on basic salary earned. Whether a particular payment forms part of basic salary can depend on its nature, the applicable regulations, employment contract, company policy, or collective bargaining agreement.

Amounts that may be treated differently include allowances, overtime pay, holiday pay, premium pay, night-shift differential, and similar additional compensation. Enter only the basic salary figures that apply to your situation, and confirm the treatment of other pay items with your employer or a qualified professional.

Example Calculation

Monthly basic salary: ₱25,000. Months worked: 12.

₱25,000 × 12 ÷ 12 = ₱25,000 estimated 13th month pay.

Total basic salary earned is ₱300,000. Dividing that total by 12 also equals ₱25,000.

Example With a Salary Increase

If your basic salary changed during the year, add the amounts actually earned each month instead of using only the latest rate. Example:

  • January–June: ₱25,000 each month
  • July–December: ₱30,000 each month

Total basic salary: (₱25,000 × 6) + (₱30,000 × 6) = ₱330,000. Estimated 13th month pay: ₱330,000 ÷ 12 = ₱27,500.

Use Monthly Salary Breakdown for this situation so the estimate reflects the salary you actually earned, not only the rate after a promotion or increase.

What If I Worked Less Than a Full Year?

The same formula still applies: divide the basic salary you actually earned by 12. You do not need to have worked all 12 months to estimate a prorated amount.

Example: monthly basic salary ₱30,000, months worked 8.

₱30,000 × 8 = ₱240,000 total basic salary earned. ₱240,000 ÷ 12 = ₱20,000 estimated 13th month pay.
