How Many Calories Does Walking Burn?

Walking calorie burn is not one universal number. Two people covering the same path can expend different energy because bodies and walks differ. The main factors are:

  • Body weight — the MET formula scales with kilograms of body mass.
  • Walking speed — faster walking generally uses a higher MET value.
  • Walking duration — longer sessions increase total calories if pace stays similar.
  • Distance — distance and time are linked through speed.
  • Terrain — hills and inclines usually cost more energy than flat ground.
  • Individual differences — fitness, walking technique, rest breaks, and metabolism all matter.

This page answers “How many calories do I burn by walking?” with an estimate you can recalculate as those inputs change.

How Many Calories Does 30 Minutes of Walking Burn?

Thirty minutes is a common walking block. For a 70 kg person at a moderate 4 km/h pace on flat ground, this calculator estimates about 110 kcal. The table below uses the same calculation engine for Slow, Moderate, and Brisk walking.

Calories burned walking for 30 minutes
WeightSlowModerateBrisk
50 kg74 kcal79 kcal92 kcal
60 kg88 kcal95 kcal110 kcal
70 kg103 kcal110 kcal129 kcal
80 kg118 kcal126 kcal147 kcal
90 kg132 kcal142 kcal165 kcal
100 kg147 kcal158 kcal184 kcal

Values are rounded to whole kilocalories. Change weight or pace in the calculator for a result that matches your walk.

How Many Calories Does 1 Hour of Walking Burn?

One hour at a steady pace roughly doubles a 30-minute estimate when weight and speed stay the same. A 70 kg person walking briskly at 5 km/h for 60 minutes is estimated at about 257 kcal.

50 kg147 kcal158 kcal184 kcal
60 kg176 kcal189 kcal221 kcal
70 kg206 kcal221 kcal257 kcal

How Many Calories Does 10,000 Steps Burn?

There is no single universal number for 10,000 steps. Stride length varies, body weight varies, walking pace varies, and terrain varies. A person with a longer stride covers more distance in the same step count, which changes estimated time and calories.

With a general stride of 0.762 m, 10,000 steps is about 7.6 km. For a 70 kg person at a moderate 4 km/h pace, that walk is roughly 1 hour 54 minutes and about 420 kcal. Use Steps mode to calculate your own estimate.

Does Walking Help With Weight Loss?

Walking is physical activity, so it increases energy expenditure. Over time, that extra energy use can contribute to a calorie deficit if overall food intake and daily activity support it. Walking also has practical advantages: it is accessible, it can be done in short sessions, and many people can sustain it more easily than high-intensity exercise.

This calculator does not promise a specific weight-loss result. Weight change depends on many factors, including diet, sleep, medical conditions, and consistency. Use the estimate as one planning input, not as a predicted number of kilograms lost.

Walking vs. Running Calories

Running generally burns more calories per minute than walking at typical speeds because it is a higher-intensity activity with a higher MET value. Walking can still add up when sessions are longer, and it is often easier to repeat day after day.

If your goal is total weekly energy expenditure, the activity you can maintain matters as much as calories per minute. This page estimates walking only and does not calculate running.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator uses a metabolic equivalent (MET) approach. Estimated calories are:

Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight_kg / 200 × duration_minutes

MET values are stored in one configuration object so the walking speeds can be reviewed without changing the formula. The current mapping is:

  • Slow Walking3 km/h, MET 2.8 (Easy or casual walking).
  • Moderate Walking4 km/h, MET 3 (Comfortable walking).
  • Brisk Walking5 km/h, MET 3.5 (Fast everyday walking).
  • Very Brisk Walking6 km/h, MET 4.3 (Fast-paced walking).
  • Power Walking7 km/h, MET 5 (Very fast walking).

Distance for a duration-based walk is speed × duration_hours. Miles use miles = kilometers × 0.621371. Custom speeds interpolate MET between the values above. Optional terrain multiplies MET by 1.0 (flat), 1.2 (slight incline), or 1.5 (hilly). Those terrain factors are documented planning assumptions, not a measured treadmill grade.

Step distance is steps × stride_length. Height-based stride uses height × 0.415 (0.413 if female is selected). The general stride is 0.762 m. Age and sex are optional context and do not change the MET calorie formula itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does walking burn?
There is no single number. Calories burned while walking depend mainly on body weight, walking speed, duration or distance, terrain, and individual differences such as fitness and walking technique. This calculator estimates energy use with a MET-based formula from those inputs.

How many calories does 30 minutes of walking burn?
For a 70 kg person walking at a moderate 4 km/h pace on flat ground, this calculator estimates about 110 kcal in 30 minutes. A lighter person or a slower pace burns fewer calories; a heavier person or a brisker pace burns more. Use the comparison table on this page for other weights.

How many calories does 1 hour of walking burn?
A 70 kg person walking briskly at 5 km/h for 60 minutes is estimated at about 257 kcal with this calculator. Doubling the time roughly doubles the estimate if weight, pace, and terrain stay the same.

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?
10,000 steps is not a fixed calorie amount because stride length, body weight, pace, and terrain all change the result. Using a general 0.762 m stride, 10,000 steps is about 7.6 km. For a 70 kg person at a moderate pace, that is roughly 420 kcal. Enter your own steps for a personal estimate.

Does walking speed affect calories burned?
Yes. Faster walking uses a higher MET value, so calories per minute usually increase with pace. A slower pace can still add up if you walk for longer. This calculator maps Slow, Moderate, Brisk, Very Brisk, and Power Walking to different speeds and MET values.

Does body weight affect calories burned?
Yes. The MET formula multiplies by body weight, so a heavier person generally expends more energy than a lighter person for the same walking time and pace. Switching between kg and lb only changes the unit; internal calculations stay in kilograms.

How accurate is a walking calorie calculator?
It is an estimate, not a measurement. Wearable devices, fitness level, arm swing, stop-and-go walking, hills, and metabolism can all produce a different real-world result. Treat the number as a planning guide, not a medical or training prescription.

How many steps does it take to burn 500 calories?
The step count depends on weight, pace, and stride. For a 70 kg person walking briskly at 5 km/h with a general 0.762 m stride, this calculator estimates about 1 hour 57 minutes and roughly 12,754 steps to reach 500 kcal. Use Calorie goal mode to calculate your own target.

Can walking help me lose weight?
Walking increases energy expenditure and can support a calorie deficit when combined with overall eating and activity patterns. It does not guarantee a specific amount of weight loss. Sustainable change depends on many factors beyond a single walk.

Does walking uphill burn more calories?
Usually yes, because walking against gravity costs more energy. This calculator’s optional terrain setting uses planning assumptions: flat is 1.0×, slight incline is 1.2×, and hilly is 1.5× the selected MET. Actual hills vary widely, so treat those multipliers as approximations.

Is walking better than running for weight loss?
Running generally burns more calories per minute. Walking is often easier to sustain for longer sessions and may be gentler on joints. The better choice is the activity you can do consistently. This page does not rank one as medically superior.

Can I calculate calories burned from distance?
Yes. Choose Distance mode, enter km or miles, and select a pace. The calculator estimates walking time from speed × distance, then applies the same MET formula used for duration and steps.

Is this walking calorie calculator free?
Yes. You can use it as often as you like at no cost, with no account required.
